On 7 August, the mayor of Málaga Francisco de la Torre accompanied by City Councillors of Tourism and Innovation, Rosa Sanchez and Susana Carillo, presented ELVITEN during a press conference. The Rad Power Bikes will be utilised by residents of Málaga to promote sustainable mobility in the city.
The city of Málaga participates in ELVITEN through project partner Promálaga. For a year, more 250 users will test the forty e-bikes over the period of two months. During the year long demonstrations, the e-Bikes will be collecting data via black boxes. ELVITEN will gather data regarding the trajectory of trips taken, frequency of use, user opinions, ratings and issues encountered by users. This information will be used to create a strategy for implementing EL-Vs in other European cities.
The e-Bikes are given to selected users with a helmet and a security lock for them to use for a period of two months. In order to qualify, citizens must be 18 years or older, with a valid drivers license and a secure place to store the e-Bike. Once the user is selected, they must make a 100 euro deposit that will be returned at the end of the trial period. As there are 15 e-hubs installed in the parking lot of the Tabacalera, the principle users are workers who work close to the complex. There have been 285 submitted user applications to date. Thirty-seven bikes have already been utilised and a total of 942 trips have been registered. The applications are still open and all interested users are welcomed to apply for the opportunity to receive an e-Bike. For more information, visit the Promálaga website.
